ROK Tree Care was recently called to assist with the removal of several large laurel trees growing beside the boundary wall of a historic church in Co. Waterford. Over time, these fast-growing trees had begun to exert pressure on the wall, creating a potential structural risk.

Protecting Heritage Structures and Livestock
The concern wasn’t just the integrity of the wall; it was also the safety of nearby livestock. The landowner feared that if one of the laurels fell and broke part of the wall, it would create an opening for his animals to enter the graveyard. This posed a serious risk, as the graveyard contains several mature yew trees, which are highly toxic if ingested.
Right Tree, Right Place
Laurel is a vigorous and spreading species. When not routinely maintained, it can quickly become overgrown and inappropriate for confined or sensitive settings. This job served as a clear reminder of the importance of species selection and long-term planning when planting near potentially delicate/precious structures or livestock.

We carefully removed the laurel trees, ensuring the wall was not disturbed in the process. The landowner can now rest easy knowing both the historic site and his animals are protected.
