Some tree removals present one or two challenges. This beech tree removal in Co. Waterford seemed to present almost every hazard imaginable.
The mature beech was positioned directly above a residential property, adjacent to a bridge and waterway, with overhead electrical cables, telephone lines, live traffic and regular pedestrian access all within the immediate work zone. With so many constraints surrounding the tree, a conventional dismantling approach would have been slow and unnecessarily complicated.

After assessing the site, we elected to use specialist heavy machinery fitted with a timber grab to assist with the removal. This allowed large sections of timber to be secured and lifted under complete control throughout the dismantling process, significantly reducing the risks associated with working above sensitive targets.
The operation required careful coordination between the climber, ground crew and machine operator. Branches and stem sections were removed systematically, with each piece controlled from the moment it was cut until it reached the ground. Traffic management measures were also put in place to protect road users while allowing the work to progress safely and efficiently.

Using mechanical assistance not only improved safety but also reduced the amount of manual handling required on site. Large timber sections could be lifted clear of walls, gardens and infrastructure before being processed into manageable lengths for removal.
This project demonstrates the value of combining traditional arboricultural techniques with modern equipment. By using the right machinery and planning the operation carefully, we were able to remove a highly challenging tree while protecting surrounding property, utilities and the public.
