We were recently instructed to remove a pair of mature beech trees growing alongside a road in Co. Waterford following concerns about their long-term safety and structural condition.
The larger of the two trees had experienced the failure of two substantial stems over the previous three to four years. While the remaining tree was still standing, the repeated failures indicated an ongoing structural issue and significantly increased the risk of further branch or stem loss in the future. Given its roadside location and the potential consequences of another failure, the decision was made to remove the tree before it became an immediate hazard.
A smaller neighbouring beech was also showing signs of decline. With the removal of the larger tree, it would lose much of the shelter and protection it had previously enjoyed. Taking its condition into account, along with the likelihood of increased exposure to wind and weather, the decision was made to remove both trees as part of a single project.

Due to the size of the trees and their position adjacent to the highway, the work required careful planning and traffic management throughout the operation. Mechanical assistance was used to safely handle and remove the larger timber sections, allowing the trees to be dismantled efficiently while minimising disruption to the surrounding area.

Although the loss of mature trees is never taken lightly, there are occasions where tree removal represents the most responsible long-term solution. In this case, the plan is to replant suitable replacement trees in the future, ensuring the site continues to benefit from tree cover while avoiding the risks associated with the declining specimens.
This project highlights the importance of monitoring mature trees over time. Previous failures can often provide valuable insight into future risk, allowing informed management decisions to be made before more serious problems occur.
