We recently carried out pruning work for a customer in Waterford who was struggling to establish grass beneath a mature tree. The dense canopy was preventing enough sunlight from reaching the ground, leaving the lawn thin and patchy despite regular maintenance.
After assessing the tree and the surrounding area, we recommended a combination of crown thinning and crown raising. This approach allowed us to selectively remove branches throughout the canopy and increase clearance beneath the tree, improving light penetration without dramatically altering its appearance or natural form.
One of the most common mistakes made when trying to increase light levels is carrying out an excessive crown reduction. While this can provide a short-term improvement, it often results in a proliferation of vigorous regrowth, creating a denser canopy and a larger management problem in the future. By contrast, careful crown thinning and crown raising achieve the desired result while maintaining the tree’s structure, health and long-term appearance.
The work was completed over the course of a day, with all arisings chipped and removed from site. To help the lawn recover, a fresh application of grass seed was spread beneath the canopy once the pruning had been completed.

This project is a good example of how thoughtful tree surgery can benefit the surrounding landscape without resorting to heavy-handed reductions. By selecting the right pruning techniques, it is often possible to improve light levels, encourage healthier grass growth and retain the character of a mature tree for many years to come.
